Area of scientific activity: Anabela is a researcher in the field of Immunology & Infection. She has been focusing in the study of host immune mechanisms involved in the control/susceptibility to infection, in particular the signaling profile induced by Leishmania parasites in host immune cells. She has been developing and characterizing a new approach to study, in particular, exosome-based secretion pathways. One of the main interests of the group is the understanding of the host immune mechanisms involved in the control/susceptibility to infection, in particular the signaling profile induced by Leishmania parasites in host immune cells. Our recent achievements demonstrated that a visceral Leishmania species can differentially target PI3K/Akt, MAPKs and NF-κB to modulate the maturation, activation, and immunostimulatory abilities of dendritic cells (DCs). Other areas of Anabelasinterest are the identification and validation of new therapeutic targets and drug delivery systems based on nanoformulations. In particular, the evaluation and characterization of new BNIP compounds with anti-trypanosomatids activity. Her group has been developing PLGA nanoparticle encapsulation of anti-Leishmania drugs in order to solve several limitations of conventional drug delivery. These nanoformulations in vivo led to a significant reduction on the parasite burden in the spleen of infected mice compared to the free drug, suggesting that PLGA nanoparticles provide effective delivery of anti-Leishmania drugs for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. A similar approach is currently being performed in T. brucei. Anabela is also interested in the improvement of diagnostic tools for leishmaniasis. Indeed, her group has reported a strategy consisting in the combination of two well defined Leishmania antigens, LicTXNPx and rK39, which proved to be a sensitive and specific improvement to the current serological diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis. Supervising experience at post-graduate level: Anabela has successfully completed the supervision or co-supervision of 24 MSc students, 4 post-Doc and 8 PhD students and currently supervises or co-supervises 1 MSc students, 8 PhD students, 3 post-Docs and two junior researchers. Participation in Networks (current or concluded): Anabela coordinates the Europe-India consortium New Indigo, networking to target specific small molecules to control infections due to Trypanosomatids. She has also participated in a COST Action 008 and in the Immunotherapy SOE1/P1/E014IMMUNONET network. Actually participate in two COST Actions: CM1307: TARGETED CHEMOTHERAPY TOWARDS DISEASES CAUSED BY ENDOPARASITES and BM:1202: European Network on Microvesicles and Exosomes in Health and Disease. Participation in Research Projects (current or concluded): Anabela has been the Principal Investigator of 8 projects financed by Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) and of 3 projects financed by Gulbenkian Foundation and University of Porto. Anabela has also been a Member of the Team of 10 projects financed by FCT and of 2 projects financed by Gulbenkian Foundation and University of Porto. Anabela has been the Principal Investigator of 8 international cooperation projects financed by CRUP/CAPES (Brazil) INSERM/FCT (France), GRICES/French Embassy (France), EGIDE/FCT (France), Treaty of Windsor Anglo-Portuguese Joint Research Programme (UK), British Portugal Cooperation (UK), and FP7. Actually are involved as WK leader of three FP7 projects: KINDRED, NMTRYPLI and MuLeVaClin, I last one she is Project Manager. Publications and Patents: Anabela is co-author of 74 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, 2 chapters in international bookds and 2 chapters in national books. Her publications mainly concerned the field of Infection & Immunity and, more recently, of Nanomaterials. Journals where the work was recent published include: PLoS Negl Trop Dis; The Journal of Immunology; Am J Pathol.; J Clin Microbiol.; Nanomedicine; Int J Antimicrob Agents. Anabela has an h-index of 18. She is co-inventor in two international patents and one US patent on drugs against Trypanosomatids and cancer diseases and vaccination against leishmaniasis.
