Mónica Sousa
Group leader

Monica M Sousa graduated in Biochemistry and holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto. During her PhD she studied the biology of transthyretin, an aggregation-prone protein, and generated mouse models for familial amyloid polyneuropathy. As a postdoctoral fellow, Monica was a visiting scientist at the Department of Pathology, Columbia University- New York, where she studied neurodegeneration caused by amyloid fibrils. Currently she is a group leader at the IBMC. Her group is focused on the analysis of cytoskeleton organization and dynamics during axon growth and regeneration. Since 2010 she is a vice-director of the Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular- IBMC.
