Post-graduations

We are engaged in a series of prestigious advanced Doctoral Programs (DP).

The transversal and international character of most of them is aligned with modern trends in major European universities. Of particular relevance are those that have been recently funded as FCT doctoral programs. Fostering greater internationalization by attracting and supporting promising foreign PhD students is certainly one important goal.

Besides the DP herein presented, we are also involved in other important programs, such as the DP in Molecular and Cellular Biology and the DP in Biomedical Engineering. Strengthening the international facet of DPs, namely through participation in international networks supported by Horizon 2020, will be a major objective. Apart from the abovementioned programs, two others will be strongly engaged in this objective: the DPs in Neurosciences and in Metabolism. A primary goal will be to promote increased articulation between DPs in Health Sciences, namely through joint dissemination of information (i.e. one single brochure and one central website), organization of conjunct advanced courses and seminars and an annual PhD symposium organized with the active participation of students.

The GABBA Program is a Doctoral Program in the areas of Basic and Applied Biology that started in the academic year of 1996/1997 from the merger of 4 MSc Programs of the University of Porto (UPorto), from the Faculty of Sciences (Genetics), Faculty of Medicine (Cell Biology and Oncobiology) and the Institute for Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (Immunology). The Program largely benefits from the two major Associate Laboratories (of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education) in the UPorto – the IBMC/INEB (Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology/Institute of Biomedical Engineering) and the IPATIMUP (Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the UPorto) – since they grant lab space, lecture halls and module directors doing research in the Associate Labs. It is one of the most respected doctoral programs in Portugal and it has been a pioneer with the involvement of UPorto schools and research institutes. GABBA is in its 17th edition and has trained some brilliant scientists who are now research leaders in Portugal and abroad.

We are also deeply involved in the international DP on Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences. It is jointly organized by two schools of the UPorto – the Institute for Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) and the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUP); four Research Institutions – the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC), the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the UPorto (IPATIMUP), and the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE); one Hospital – the Hospital Center of Porto (CHP). The program provides training in cellular and molecular biotechnology applied to health sciences within a truly interdisciplinary and international environment.

IB2 - Industrial Biological Biomaterials Doctorate is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network - European Industrial Doctorate (ITN-EID) funded under the European Community 7th Framework Program. The IB2 Network provides an elite doctorate program designed to train PhD candidates at the highest academic level in combination with strong components in entrepreneurship, technology transfer and business development since part of the research and training will be carried out in an industrial environment and using a problem solving approach. The coordinating partner, INEB, is an established European research institute in biomedical engineering, specialized in the development of innovative biomaterials and cell therapies. The industrial partner, Grifols, is a major healthcare company that produces life-saving protein therapies. The other partners involved are IBEC, a highly multidisciplinary research institute with well-established collaborations both with INEB and Grifols, and the UPorto and IPATIMUP, which will consistently contribute to the training program.

The MCbiology PhD program provides advanced training in the Life Sciences with a focus on Molecular and Cell Biology. The program has been specifically designed for highly motivated students and it is set up to be the starting point for a career in academic or industrial research. The MCbiology PhD program targets particularly the development of creativity, scientific independence and rigorous research skills. Each student has the opportunity to define its own path through the program by choosing its research topic and specific short courses. The students also participate in a core of advanced courses, which provide the necessary knowledge to face the many challenges of advanced Molecular and Cell Biology. The MCbiology PhD program is jointly organized by ICBAS, Faculdade de Ciências (FCUP) and IBMC.
