Rare Disease Day 2026 – The central role of patients in research
27 February 2026 | i3S – Corino de Andrade Auditorium

As part of the Rare Disease Day 2026 celebrations, i3S will host a commemorative afternoon dedicated to the central role of patients in research, highlighting the importance of the active involvement of patient communities and their associations in the scientific process. This initiative aims to create a space for dialogue and exchange between researchers, patients, and patient associations, while giving visibility to the work developed at i3S in this area, which—despite its impact—remains relatively little known within the institute.
Throughout the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to learn about different research projects that actively involve patients and patient associations, reflecting on how these collaborations contribute to a more participatory, relevant, and socially engaged science.
The event is designed as a moment of sharing and reflection, beginning with a standing lunch, followed by roundtable discussions, interactive dynamics, and moments of dialogue between science and society.
This initiative aims to engage the i3S community broadly, promoting the sharing of experiences, best practices, and success stories that highlight the added value of involving patients and their associations in scientific research, in line with the mission and institutional values of i3S.

The event will be held in Portuguese. It includes the sharing of supporting materials related to the topics addressed, as well as lunch for participants.

Target audience: Patients and representatives of patient associations, i3S researchers, and other healthcare professionals.
