creating a
healthier future

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week
19 November 2025 | i3S, Auditorium Mariano Gago

Each year, around 35 000 people lose their lives due to infections by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Europe. When the diagnosis of a pathogenic agent is uncertain, therapies often rely on broad-spectrum antimicrobials. But over time, many microorganisms have learned to resist these treatments, making once-curable infections harder, and sometimes impossible to treat.

With resistance rising and the discovery of new antibiotics slowing, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is now one of the most pressing Public Health challenges of our time. Without action, annual deaths caused by antimicrobial resistance could escalate to 39 Million by 2050, an equivalent to 3 deaths per minute.

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (18 to 24 November) is a global initiative by the World Health Organization aimed at raising awareness, improving understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and encouraging collective action to prevent the spread of drug-resistant pathogens.

Stopping the spread of drug-resistant infections takes teamwork. Governments, hospital managers, doctors, nurses, lab experts and scientists, all have a role to play. By sharing clear, timely information about how to prevent infections, we can protect everyone in our communities.

Act now: protect our present, secure our future.
