Call for new Research Groups

Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) is welcoming applications from outstanding scientists to establish new independent Research Groups.

Located in the world heritage city of Porto, Portugal, i3S is a multidisciplinary research institute that brings together internationally recognized scientists working on basic, translational and clinical research, with the aim of tackling major societal challenges in biomedical sciences. i3S is organized into three Research Programs:

  • Cancer;
  • Host Interaction and Response;
  • Neurobiology and Neurologic Disorders.

The activity at i3S ranges from the study of living organisms at the molecular and cellular level, to the dissection of disease mechanisms and the development of preventative diagnostic and therapeutics, in a full cycle from bench to bedside. The i3S provides a highly stimulating scientific environment, equipped with up-to-date technological platforms and in close proximity with schools of the University of Porto and hospitals.

In this open international call, we are looking for both junior and mid-career researchers from any nationality. Eligible applicants are scientists (PhD, MD or MD-PhD degree) with a successful postdoctoral experience. Applicants must have an excellent scientific track record and are expected to pursue highly innovative research projects in frame with one of the i3S Integrative Programs and to be able to raise extramural funding. The number of successful applications will depend on factors such as overall scientific excellence and laboratory space constraints. The limited number of new research groups that are expected to be approved will be distributed between junior and mid-career researchers who will be evaluated separately.

Institutional support, including laboratory space and access to state-of-the-art facilities, will be provided by the i3S. Salary support is not included, and approval of the application does not automatically entail successful candidates to a research position. Candidates that require salary support should apply for a research position through an independent call for applications, either promoted by the i3S or promoted by an external body like FCT or the EC.

Motivated candidates should submit a complete group application, according to the “i3S Guidelines for the constitution of Research Groups” (Section D).
Applications cannot exceed 10 pages, excluding the applicant's full CV.
The complete application should be submitted here until December 30, 2020.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews during January 2021.
