Fátima Carneiro wins a “Gago Award”

Pathologist and researcher Fátima Carneiro was recently awarded a medal “Gago Award in European Science Policy” for her work in the field of science and in terms of disseminating scientific culture in Europe. The award was presented during the 5th Gago Conference, which took place at the beginning of October in Heidelberg (Germany), and which this year was dedicated to the theme “Cancer research: society at the frontiers of knowledge”.

In a joint organization of the Ciência Viva agency and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), this edition of the conference also acknowledged in the “Gago Awards” the researchers Michael Baumann, from the DKFZ, and Anton Berns, President of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences. For the pathologist Fátima Carneiro, this recognition makes her very proud, mainly “because it feels that it reflects the recognition of the activity and scientific dissemination of Ipatimup and i3S”.

Fátima Carneiro is a researcher at i3S, Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and director of the Anatomy Pathology service at Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João (CHUSJ). She was President of the European Society of Pathology (2011-2013) and of the National Academy of Medicine of Portugal (2018-2020). In 2005, she was awarded the “Stimulation of Excellence” award by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, for the value of her curriculum vitae and a year later she was decorated by the President of the Republic with the Order of Infante D. Henrique for her contribution to the science. In 2018, she was named the most influential pathologist in the world by the scientific journal “The Pathologist”.

Co-author of more than 400 scientific articles (H-Index 77) and 26 book chapters, including UICC and IARC publications, Fátima Carneiro was also co-editor and member of the Editorial Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) books on “Tumours of the Digestive System” (4th and 5th editions). Her research activity focuses on the study of the etiopathogenesis and molecular pathology of stomach cancer.

About the Gago Conferences

The “Gago Conferences on European Science Policy” provide an international forum to enhance debate on emerging research and innovation policy issues in Europe, as well as to promote the necessary involvement of key stakeholders in policy making and knowledge diffusion in education and scientific culture. The Conferences also seek to strengthen international scientific and technological cooperation in a network in Europe, with a view to having a positive impact on a global scale.

The Gago Awards were launched in the first edition of these Conferences, which took place in 2018 at the i3S, and aim to honor the legacy of José Mariano Gago, paying tribute to inspiring leaders, women and men, who contributed to the advancement of science and European technologies, thus strengthening our collective future and shared prosperity. In the first edition, pathologist Manuel Sobrinho Simões was one of the winners.
