Introductory Statistics for Biomedical Sciences, 3rd edition

Basic and crucial statistical concepts will be introduced with a focus on biological and medical science. The course aims to give the necessary support for young researchers interested in acquiring introductory skills in statistical methods.
Objectives: To develop knowledge and understanding of collecting, analyzing and interpretation of data in biostatistics. To develop critical and analytical skills appropriated to data analysis in different contexts. The course will be based on problem solving, supported by the statistical packages SPSS and R, which will be used in the solution of the problems addressed in the classes.
Target audience: PhD students and Early Stage Researchers | i3S members only
Course duration: 15 hours (5 sessions) | [ 9:00h – 12:30] - Please note that course dates and times may be adjusted and rescheduled.
Certificate: A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants who attend 80% of the course sessions.
Course requirements: Laptop with (programs SPSS, R, G*Power)
Program
Descriptive statistics; Probability; Binomial and Poisson distributions; Normal distribution; Confidence intervals and hypothesis testing; Power Analysis and Sample Size; Analysis of Variance; Linear Regression and Correlation; Logistic Regression; Non-Parametric Statistics. Learning outcomes: To provide an overview of statistical methods and their importance to the practice of basic and clinical research. To develop critical skills, especially critical reading of literature in basic and clinical research.

Cancellation by the course participant
In case a registered participant wishes to cancel a paid registration or does not attend the course, the registration fee will not be refunded. Substitutions will only be made in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the course organizers.
Cancellation by the Institution
The i3S reserves the right to cancel the course, in case of an insufficient number of participants, organizational reasons, or other unforeseeable events that render the execution of the course impossible. In case of cancelation by the organization the fee will be refunded.
In addition, i3S reserves the right to amend course times, dates or published prices if absolutely necessary. The organizer shall immediately inform the pre-registered participants of these alterations. Any cancellation or substitution requests should be requested by e-mail.
