ABOUT PORTO

Porto is Portugal's second largest city and the capital of the Northern region.
Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal".
Porto's Historical Centre was registered as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The city is traditional and historical, but also contemporary, which can be seen in its streets, its monuments and its museus.
Icons such as "Serralves" or "Casa da Música" and a regular agenda of music, art and sports events stand witness to a urban space, in constant movement.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports is the port wine, produced exclusively in the Douro region and aged in cellars.

It is with the votes of worldwide travellers from 174 countries that Porto wins this European title again for the third time (2012, 2014, 2017). Travellers from the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, South-Africa, South Korea, Ireland and Canada, among others,... voted Porto in the first place in this competition.

There are thousand charms and corners that are worth discovering in Porto, capital of the North. Porto is one of the oldest cities of the country, and, as such, its path is sinuous and picturesque. It is a unique experience to stroll through its streets and feel the pulse of the city. Learn more: http://visitportoandnorth.travel/Porto-and-the-North/To-do/Porto
