CAREER

In 1983 I have concluded the licentiateship in Chemical Engineering, with a specialization in Pollution. Since 1980, I have worked in the Portuguese Secretary of Environment in Air Pollution. I was selected for junior lecturer for the Production and Systems Engineering Department of the University of Minho, Portugal, in 1984. There, I have developed a Master Thesis on the Statistical Treatment of Outliers. In 1988, I went to the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, where I worked on a PhD thesis in Applied Mathematics, concerning the economic dispatch and optimal scheduling of power stations. I returned to the University of Minho in 1992, where I became Auxiliary Professor and, in 1999, Associate Professor. During those years I have made lots of consultancy in statistics as can be seen my publication list. I have worked on food industrial problems, food rationing of poultry, and health statistics. In 2004, I have stayed for two months in East Timor, where I taught statistics in East Timor National University. I have also taught and made some consultancy for the National Bank of East Timor. In 2010, I have applied for a position in the Population Studies Department of the Biomedical Sciences Institute Abel Salazar, (https://sigarra.up.pt/icbas/pt/func_geral.formview?p_codigo=485434) one of the faculties of the University of Porto, which provides Medical and Veterinary degrees. Currently, I am a researcher at the Public Health Institute of the University of Porto (http://ispup.up.pt/research/epiunit/biostatistics-health/).
