Paula Boaventura
Junior Researcher
Paula Boaventura is a researcher at Ipatimup at the Cancer Biology group since 2006. Previously, she had been a teacher at Instituto Superior de Educação de Fafe and at Universidade Fernando Pessoa. Paula´s research focuses on late effects of low-dose radiation exposure: cancer and non-cancer effects, namely cardiovascular disease. For that purpose she has been following, since 2006, a cohort of former tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) patients exposed as children to X-rays to induce scalp epilation. Her work has led to the publication of several papers on the side effects observed in this cohort that represents a model of low dose radiation exposure. In 2010 the work was awarded with the Prize ACS-MERCK SERONO in Cancer Epidemiology. Since 2013 she is also working on health literacy, namely health literacy for obesity prevention, as obesity is being considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cancer. She is a member of the team that has been developing a digital game designed for mobile phones targeting nutrition literacy improvement in youngsters (NutriBuddy ? project financed by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian).
