Workshop on Scientific Writing: How to streamline the process of writing a scientific paper

4-5 December 2023 | i3S, Porto, Portugal

Effective communication of scientific findings through high-quality publications is essential for any researcher's career. However, writing and publishing scientific manuscripts can be challenging and time-consuming, especially for early-career scientists who may still need to gain the skills to craft a scientific paper efficiently.

In this 4-lecture seminars designed for graduate students, postdocs, and researchers, participants will learn how to apply the Publicase Method, an objective and straightforward technique for writing scientific papers quickly and efficiently.

Participants will learn how to apply the Publicase Method, an objective and straightforward. The Publicase Method can be applied to grant writing and other documents such as proposals and theses. The focus of the sessions IS NOT on improving language or writing skills per se but rather on how to overcome procrastination and apply the Publicase Method for a faster and efficient production of high-quality scientific papers. During the workshop, the instructor deconstructs the entire scientific paper into bite-sized microtasks that turn the huge task of writing a paper into an easier and pleasant experience. Participants learn how work with templates to produce their own scientific papers.

Target audience: The Tailored Training in Scientific Writing workshop is highly recommended for graduate students, postdocs, and scientists working in the biological, biomedical fields and life sciences, who need to produce and publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. In the workshops, instructor always does the best to use relevant examples from papers published in peer-reviewed journals that align with the main fields of work of most attendees.

To ensure an optimal learning experience, the number of participants will be limited. This allows for personalized attention and interaction with the instructor, facilitating a more collaborative and engaging learning environment.

Please note that this sessions may not be suitable for researchers in other fields or disciplines.

Couse duration: Participants should expect to spend around 8 hours in class total.

Certificate: Certificate of attendance will be issued at the end of the course to participants that meet the following: attendance to 3 out 4 sessions.

More about The Publicase Method

The Publicase Methods relies on three main ideas: Microproductivity, Storytelling, and Prompt Questions. For a sneak peek into the Publicase Method, watch this video.

The sessions focuses not on improving language but on how to build the manuscript's narrative and achieve faster and more efficient production of high-quality scientific papers using the Publicase Method.

The Publicase Method is a unique approach that breaks down the writing of a scientific paper into smaller, more manageable tasks. The authors achieve this by deconstructing the entire paper into bite-sized microtasks. This approach helps make the process of writing a scientific paper more enjoyable and less overwhelming for participants.

Through the program, participants will learn how to identify the hidden patterns and narratives that exist within scientific papers. Real examples taken from peer-reviewed journals to teach these skills, will be used during sessions. By learning how to recognize these patterns, participants will be better equipped to write clear, concise, and effective scientific papers that stand out from the rest.
