3R Day - Models in Biomedical Research
18 October 2024 | i3S, Porto
Models are indispensable in biomedical research. To understand gene function or disease mechanisms, we need model systems that replicate crucial aspects of living organisms while being suitable for manipulation and experimentation. Significant advances in bioengineering and stem cell research have blurred the traditional line between simple in-vitro models and complex animal models.
More sophisticated in-vitro models now hold the potential to replace some animal experiments and reduce the overall number of animals used. However, animals remain important models, raising ongoing ethical questions about their use and the refinement of experimental methods.
This event highlights the fundamental principles of animal experimentation known as the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. These principles are essential for reproducible and high-quality research.
By focusing on the 3Rs applied to several areas of biomedical research, we aim to promote ethical practices, ensuring that the use of animals is minimized and refined whenever possible.
This is the second edition of the 3R Day, the annual event of the 3R Knowledge Center.
As part of the 3RKC mission, this event provides a unique stage to showcase groundbreaking 3Rs-related research conducted in Portugal. It serves as an opportunity for researchers to come together, share insights, and continue to improve how advanced models are used in biomedical research.
