Webinar "Bioethics and Narrative Medicine:
deliberating and deciding in times of pandemic"

Everyday health professionals and caregivers face ethical issues that require urgent and difficult answers. The pressure to find the best solution to ethical problems implies an emotional burden on everyone involved. In addition, ethical deliberation intersects with dimensions of healthcare that are not restricted to the care provided, also involving social, economic and political aspects. Deliberative models with a prescriptive format are easily desired as a way to alleviate the suffering inherent in difficult decision-making. Despite their quality, these models hardly respond to the concrete problems experienced by those who have to make decisions and by those who are the object of them.
In the current context of the pandemic, we need to make difficult decisions on screening criteria, prioritizing criteria for hospital care, allocation of human and material resources and restrictions on mobility. The tendency to address ethical issues based on the notion of rights that can be defended in court has intensified during this period of crisis.
Narrative Bioethics and Narrative Medicine can make an essential contribution to the understanding of (bio) ethical problems as biographical reports, inscribed in a specific time and space, therefore contextualized.

Tomás Domingo Moratalla, PhD in Philosophy and Arts, Professor of Philosophical Anthropology at UNED, Researcher and Author of publications in the field of Narrative Bioethics

Maria de Jesus Cabral (Ph.D Portuguese Catholic University, 2005), Assistant Professor and Researcher at ULisboa, with expertise in nineteenth-century symbolist theatre (French, Belgian and Portuguese literature) from comparative perspectives, relationships between Theatre and Literary Reading and Narrative Medicine. She is a Member of the Medical Humanities Project (CEAUL) since 2012 and develops research, training and fieldwork with application to Health Ethics. She is currently Co-PI of the SHARE -Health & Humanities Acting Together Project.
