Bruno Sarmento appointed foreign correspondent of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Researcher Bruno Sarmento, leader of the “Nanomedicines & Translational Drug Delivery” research group at i3S, was recently appointed Member and Foreign Correspondent of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences for his “significant contributions to the advancement of pharmaceutical nanotechnology”.
Considered “one of the leading names in international pharmaceutical research, with vast experience in nanotechnology and innovative drug delivery systems”, Bruno Sarmento was appointed on the initiative of academics Adriana Pohlmann, Eliana Lima, Leonardo Teixeira and the Vice-President of the Academy Sílvia Guterres, and evaluated by all members who considered that his research over the years has been fundamental “in the development of new methods to improve the bioavailability and efficacy of drugs, using nanotechnologies for the precise delivery of drugs into the body”.
According to the evaluators, the i3S researcher “stands out in the study of new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of chronic and complex diseases, areas of great interest in both pharmaceutical science and biomedicine. His work not only contributes to scientific advancement, but also has a direct impact on several clinical applications, seeking to improve the quality of life of patients and the efficiency of available treatments”.
The researcher added that “the fact that I maintain regular scientific collaborations with several Brazilian pharmaceutical and biomedical research groups, as well as with pharmaceutical companies, was also relevant for this nomination”. For Bruno Sarmento, this nomination represents recognition of the impact that the research and knowledge generated by his research group and its collaborators have achieved. It is also, he adds, “recognition of my contribution to the training of young Portuguese and Brazilian pharmacists for more than 15 years, thanks to several teaching missions carried out and the supervision of postgraduate students”.
About Bruno Sarmento
Graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) in 2002, Bruno Sarmento completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at U.Porto in 2007, in collaboration with Queen's University (Canada), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain).
From 2007 to 2012, he held a postdoctoral position at FFUP, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, and since 2008 he has been a Visiting Associate Professor at the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS).
Co-founder of Inovapotek, a U.Porto spin-off, in 2008, and current member of the Advisory Board, Bruno Sarmento joined INEB (currently integrated into i3S) in 2012, as an associate researcher. He is currently leader of the research group “Nanomedicines and Translational Drug Delivery” and member of the i3S board.
Bruno Sarmento is also editor of the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of several leading international journals. He was recently elected Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Controlled Release Society, the largest international scientific society in the field of controlled drug release systems.
His research focuses on the development of functionalized nanomedicines and their application in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields, particularly in the areas of diabetes, cancer and infectious diseases. He also specializes in three-dimensional tissue engineering models for in vitro/in vivo validation and correlation of nanomedicines.
