“O Estranho Terrível Outro” - Series of talks and guided tours

As part of the exhibition “O Estranho Terrível Outro” which is on display at the i3S from January the 16th to March the 19th, there will be a series of conversations with artists and scientists that will take place in the Institute’s atrium. The next session will be on February 6th, at 6 pm.

During this initiative, there will be a presentation of the book “O Estranho Terrível Outro”, by Agostinho Santos, and published by Officium Lectionis, which will be presented by pathologist Manuel Sobrinho Simões, editor José Rui Teixeira and writer and visual artist Valter Hugo Mãe. The session will have a conversation between Domingos Loureiro, painter and professor at FBAUP, Valter Hugo Mãe, Elsa Logarinho, researcher at i3S and Jorge Lima, researcher at i3S, as well as a guided tour of the exhibition by the curator Felícia de Sousa.

In these sessions, the viewer will be invited to embark on a journey into the artist’s pictorial and creative universe, and consider the relationship of the works with the theme "O Estranho Terrível Outro". The objective is to stimulate interdisciplinary reflection, highlighting the dialogue between two narratives from Science and Art.

The exhibition “O Estranho Terrível Outro" came from a series of conversations about cancer between the artist Agostinho Santos and the pathologist Manuel Sobrinho Simões and brings together a set of paintings, drawings and sculptures that the artist produced from real images of human tissue, and obtained by the scientist. These images originally served as diagnostic elements, but they also act as visual landscapes that offered fertile ground for exploring perceptions, metaphors and narratives about cancer from the perspective of a non-specialist, and very particularly from that of an artist.
