Fátima Carneiro Receives Title of Professor Emerita of the University of Porto

A global authority in pathology, research, and teaching, Fátima Carneiro has been honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor by the University of Porto. The award ceremony took place on the 24th of March during the University Day celebrations. The pathologist now joins a select group of retired professors who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers for their “outstanding contributions to Science, Society, and the University”.

For the researcher, this title from the UP represents “a great honour and recognition of a career dedicated to teaching and research, but also a way to celebrate the ties that have always bound me to the FMUP and the University of Porto where, over several decades, I've had the privilege of working with brilliant and inspiring minds, both among the faculty and the students.”

About Fátima Carneiro

With a career spanning clinical practice, research, and teaching, the i3S researcher and Retired Full Professor of FMUP is a world-leading figure in the study of gastric cancer. Voted the world’s most influential pathologist in 2018, she has received numerous distinctions and honours, including the “Stimulus to Excellence” Award from the Foundation for Science and Technology (2005) for the significance of her CV, the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator (2006) for her contribution to science, the Municipal Medal of Merit – Gold Grade (2019), the “Gago Award in European Science Policy” (2022), and the “Marshall & Warren Award” (2024) in recognition of her personal commitment and professional dedication to research on Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer. 

Fátima Carneiro served as director of the Anatomic Pathology department at the São João University Hospital Centre, where she still holds a position. She was also President of the European Society of Pathology (2011-2013) and the National Academy of Medicine of Portugal (2018-2020), a member of the Mission Board for Cancer within the EU’s Horizon Europe programme, and a reviewer for major research funding agencies, including AACR, CRUK, MRC (United Kingdom), IARC, UICC, and NMRC (Singapore). Currently, she is a board member of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences (EACS).

Co-author of over 500 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters (with a Scopus h-index of 87), including contributions to books published by IARC and UICC, Fátima Carneiro co-edited the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Digestive System (4th edition), was a permanent member of the Editorial Board of the “WHO Classification of Tumours” series (5th edition), and is currently a Specialist Member of the Editorial Board for the 6th edition focusing on “Tumours of the Digestive System”. The title of Professor Emerita of the University of Porto was conferred on the 24th of March during the Solemn Commemorative Session of University Day 2025.
