Luísa Castro
PhD Student

Luísa is a Master in Bioengineering, at FEUP/ICBAS (University of Porto), field of Molecular Biotechnology. During her studies, she enroled a Erasmus + Internship during fourth year (Feb - July 2017) at MERLN Institute (University of Maastricht, The Netherlands). She did her master thesis under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Barrias and Dr. Aureliana Sousa, at Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments Group, at i3s (Feb - July 2018).

After concluding her MSc, Luísa joined Microenvironments for New Therapies (MiNT) Group, as a research fellow (Oct 2018 - Dec 2019) under supervision of Raquel Gonçalves and Prof. Mário Barbosa, studying the extracellular matrix of the degenerated human intervertebral disc. Since January 2020, she is a PhD student at MiNT, developing her work entitled "Bioengineering of a 3D in vitro model of Annulus Fibrosus (Bio3D-AF): dissecting the impact of inflammation and mechanical loading in intervertebral disc herniation", under the supervision of Raquel Gonçalves, Prof. Mário Barbosa and Laura de Laporte (DWI / RWTH, Aachen, Germany). Currently, she is working abroad, developing magnetic biomaterials for further Annulus Fibrosus applications, at DWI, RWTH Acchen.
