After completing my studies in Biology at University of Évora I have worked for 2 years in Cell Activation and Gene Expression (CAGE) group at Instituto Biologia Molecular e Celular, Porto (IBMC) cloning and studying a new protein from the Scavenger Receptor Cysteine rich superfamily (SRCR) under the supervision of Dr Mónica Castro. After that I had a one-year fellowship from University of Minho with Prof Artur Cavaco-Paulo in a project that involved the characterization of the properties of a surfactant molecule that had implications on the development of a new agent for wound care. In 2008 I have decided to embrace a PhD project in molecular immunology with Prof Alexandre do Carmo at IBMC. My project consisted in the study of two proteins belonging to an ancient family (SRCR) but having distinct function on immunity. One of the proteins, sSc5D, was demonstrated to be more associate to innate immune responses and the other, CD6 have an important role in mediating T cell responses. In July 2013 I joined Prof Jorge Pedrosa?s group as a post-doc in a project that improves drug delivery strategies for the treatment of mycobacteriosis. Now I moved to I3S to work on a project that studies the immunomodulatory effect of CD6 targetting in neuroinflammation.
