Ricardo Ribeiro received his M.D. and PhD from the University of Porto in 2007 and 2012, respectively. He developed the PhD research at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology Porto, the Metabolic Research Laboratory, University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, and at the Department of Oncology - Division of Cancer Epidemiology, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. At present, he is a Researcher at i3S, M.D. at the Department of Clinical Pathology of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra, and Affiliated Invited Professor in the Laboratory of Genetics and Institute of Environmental Health at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.

His research activity has been focused on the development of biomarkers for genitourinary cancer, pharmacogenetics & pharmacogenomics of cancer, and in the study of excess adiposity in prostate cancer microenvironment, namely the interaction between regional fat depots and tumors. His field of research is focused on oncological research, particularly urological oncology. Current research interests are devoted to study the molecular and cellular mechanisms induced by physical exercise and excess adiposity in tumor microenvironment. He is concerned with the paracrine and endocrine effects resulting from the crosstalk between contracting muscles and hypertrophied adipose tissue with tumor's biological processes (contracting skeletal muscle-adipose tissue-tumor axis). He published more than 30 papers in international peer-reviewed (ISI) journals as first and senior author, and has given several invited talks in national and international meetings. Besides contribution with original work he has been acting as active reviewer for more than 20 international journals, including JAMA Oncology, Scientific Reports and Oncotarget, among others, and served as referee for international funding agencies: CANCEROPOLE (FR) and the National Research Program of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and its work has been awarded with several distinctions. He has participated in several competitively funded projects as partner and as PI.
