Where Ideas Grow
Marta Laranjeira
Associate Researcher
Marta Laranjeira obtained her master?s degree in 2007 and PhD in 2012, both in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), University of Porto (Portugal). She conducted her PhD research work at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Porto (FMDUP), and FEUP. Her research focused on the development of nanostructured calcium phosphate porous granules, and their potential to promote bone tissue ingrowth and rapid neovascularization, in order to achieve successful bone regeneration at the implant site. Co-culture in vitro systems were optimized to investigate human mesenchymal stem and endothelial cell behaviors, along with their interaction/communication on granules. Since 2012, as a postdoctoral investigator at INEB, Marta?s research was focused on the fabrication of micropatterned surfaces by using soft lithography techniques to modulate and understand bacterial and cell/material interactions. While conducting postdoctoral research work, she spent six months (April to July 2014 - August to November 2014) at Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan (Kyutech). The main aim of her research at Kyutech was the development and characterization of effective magnetic nanoparticles doped with a particular magnetic material. The work continues now at INEB/i3S aiming to create a novel Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for cancer detection.
