Manuel did his Biomedical Engineering Integrated MSc. in the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The focus of his MSc. thesis, supervised by Dr. Vasco Barreto at the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas, was the improvement the efficiency of gene targeting using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology. He then got in the GABBA PhD program, and performed his thesis work in the Immunology, Cancer & Glycomedicine research group at the i3S, under the supervision of Dr. Salomé Pinho. From his PhD, several publications resulted which highlighted the role of glycans in T cell development and function. He is now a postdoc at the Hannover Medical School, Germany, asking questions about how glycans can influence immune development and if they can drive immune features in disease.
