Sara Alves
Associate Researcher

Sara Alves graduated in Applied Biology at the University of Minho (Portugal) in 2007 and obtained a Masters degree in Molecular Genetics from the same University in 2009. Sara completed a PhD Program in Molecular and Environmental Biology at the University of Minho (Portugal) in 2014, under the supervision of Profs. Maria João Sousa, Ana Preto and Manuela Côrte-Real, in collaboration Dr. Muriel Priault from “Institut de Biochimie et Genetique Cellulaires” (IBGC, France). During her PhD studies Sara focused on studying the role of the KRAS oncogene in autophagy regulation in colorectal carcinoma and on the signalling pathways involved, which was aimed at the identification of new therapeutic targets for treatment of colorectal carcinoma. In May 2014, Sara joined the “Basics of life - Cellular Responses to Environmental Stress” team of “Centro de Biologia Molecular e Ambiental (CBMA, Portugal) as a Post-Doctoral Researcher (with a grant from May/2014 to October/2016) under the supervision of Prof. Manuela Côrte-Real and in collaboration with Dr. Rafael Aldabe from “Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada” (CIMA, Spain). During this period, Sara focused on studying post-translational modifications of the pro-apoptotic regulator Bax protein and their consequences in apoptosis induction. In May 2017, Sara joined the Cancer Drug Resistance Group of i3S/IPATIMUP as a Post-Doctoral Researcher (with a grant from May 2017 to April 2018) and later as a Junior Researcher (from May 2018 to October 2018), under the supervision of Prof. M. Helena Vasconcelos. During this period, Sara focused in the identification of molecular therapeutic targets for overcoming cancer multidrug resistance. Currently, Sara is a Junior Researcher in the Molecular Microbiology Group of i3S/IBMC, under the supervision of Dr. Sandra Sousa.
