Rui Sousa Martins completed his degree in Biology in July 2023, from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. He is a research intern in the Cancer Signalling & Metabolism group, at i3S, since 2021. In this group, he actively participated in research projects, having published three scientific articles in specialized international journals and a book chapter regarding telomere lengthening mechanisms in cancer.
Throughout his bachelor's, he developed his final degree project under the theme: "RET-altered medullary thyroid carcinoma: what are we missing", obtaining the maximum classification of 20 values, concluding his degree with a final GPA of 18 out of 20. 
In 2022, he was awarded with the "New Talents" national merit scholarship, promoted by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Under this scholarship, he gave three oral presentations and participated in several workshops. This scholarship sponsored the advanced course in laboratory animal science, accredited by FELASA (A,B and D functions), and a course on optical microscopy imaging for biosciences.
In 2023, he took on the position of coordinator of the scientific department of the Biology Student Union at the University of Porto. He organized several events, such as lectures, workshops and scientific expeditions, covering a wide spectrum of research carried out within the scope of Biology.
