José Maria Pereira Monteiro is honorary researcher of the Unit for Genetic & Epidemiological Research on Neurological Disorders of the IBMC, of the i3S, at the University of Porto. Consultant of Neurology and Chairman of the Headache and Facial Pain Unit, of the Hospital and Instituto CUF, Porto, and past-consultant of Neurology and past-chairman of the out-patient Neurological and Headache Clinic; founder and past-president of the Centro de Estudos de Cefaleias, of the Department of Neurology of Hospital Santo António, Centro Hospitalar of Porto. Professor Emeritus of the University of Porto (past-Associate Professor with Aggregation and chairman of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Unit of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar of the University of Porto). I. Scientific research: Main interests: 1. Genetics: primary headaches; 2. Epidemiology: primary headaches - incidence, prevalence, social impact of headaches and quality of life of headache patients; 3. Clinical features: migraine, cluster headache and autonomic cephalalgias, 4. Headaches associated with vascular lesions (CADASIL), cervicogenic headaches, chronic daily headaches, medication overuse headaches, headaches associated with autonomic disfunction; cranial neuralgias; 4. Treatment: migraine treatment (drug trials - 19). Research Awards: 25 He has 41 papers in indexed international journals; 13 book chapters; 1 jornal supplement; 2 abstract books; and 14 prizes. Past-member of the International Board of Functional Neurology and Co-Editor of a Functional Neurology supplement issue about "The Acute treatment of Migraine Attack". Past-member of the International Board do The Journal of Headache and Pain. Editor of the book on "As Cefaleias na Clínica Geral" (1st and 2nd eds.). III. Professional Associative: Effective Member of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) and of the Autonomic Disorders and Headaches Sections of the WFN. Associated Member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and member of the Research Groups on Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases of the AAN. Effective Member of the International Headache Society (IHS) and member of the IHS Ethics Committee. Past-member of the Executive Committee and Public relations of the Internacional Headache Society (IHS). Co-Founder and Past-President of the Portuguese Linguistic Committee. President of the Cluster Headache Special Interest Group da IHS. Past-Delegate of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias at the IHS. Founder-member of the European Headache Federation (EHF). Past-Member of the Executive, Public Relations and Research Committees of the EHF. Past-effective Member of the following EHF Study Groups: Cervicogenic Headache; Task Force on Chronic Daily Headache; Cluster Club; Serotonin Club. Past Delegate of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias (SPC)at the European Headache Federation. Member of the Cervicogenic Headache International Study Group. Past-Delegate of the Colégio de Neurologia of the Ordem dos Médicos (CNOM) at the European Board of Neurology (EBN) of the Union Europeène des Medicins Specialists (UEMS); past-member of the Executive Board and tresurer of the UEMS-EBN. Effective-member and past-President of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurologia (SPN)(2000-2004). Past-Delegate of the SPN at the European Federation of Neurological Societies and at the World Federation of Neurology. Founder-Member of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias (SPC). Past-president of the Executive Board, Fiscal Board and General Assembly. Past-president of the SPC Headache Classification and Therapeutical Guidelines Committees.
