Where Ideas Grow
Herbert Middleton
Technician

👋 Hello, I'm Herbert Middleton, a bilingual (Portuguese and English) Researcher at the i3S - Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto. I work in the Advanced Graphene Biomaterials Group with Dr Andreia Pereira and Dr Inês Gonçalves. My research focuses on Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs) for the Development of Self-Charging Biomedical Devices 🦾

🎓 I have an MSc. in Biomedical Materials and Devices and a BSc. in Biotechnology, both from the University of Aveiro. I have always been inspired by working at the intersection of different fields, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.

🧪⚙️ Cell and Tissue Engineering captured my imagination during my Bachelor's studies. Being a realm in which biotechnology and chemistry take centre stage for directly resolving medical problems, I was fascinated to see how different disciplines could combine and potentiate themselves.

🧱🩻 This led to my decision to enrol in the MSc. programme "Biomedical Materials and Devices", in which I learned a lot about Materials Science, Instrumentation, and Biophysics. It also made me want to always make sure that I learn continuously and initiated my interest in computer programming.

🥼🔋 After finishing my Master's thesis, I got the opportunity to work on an amazing project at the i3S - University of Porto, studying energy harvesting possibilities for cardiac medical devices. I'm currently really enjoying using my soft and hard skills to develop real-world biomedical solutions within an international team of bioengineers, cardiovascular surgeons, physicists, and electrical engineers 🦾.

🎵 Beyond academia, I'm passionate about music, history, politics, and world exploration. Traveling, especially, holds a special place in my heart, and I eagerly anticipate extensive adventures ahead.
