José Carlos Machado
Group leader

José C. Machado (JCM) is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, Group Leader at i3S and a member of the Executive Committees of i3S and Ipatimup. He studied Biology at the University of Porto and developed his PhD at the Universities of Tubingen, Germany, and Porto, Portugal. JCM is best known for his scientific work on the role of Helicobacter pylori infection and E-cadherin in gastric cancer. He was a member of the scientific committees of UEG (United European Gastroenterology) and ESHG (European Society of Human Genetics). He was awarded the ECP (European Cancer Prevention Organization) Young Researcher Prize 2000, a Scholar-in-training Award for Promising Cancer Research from AACR in 2001, the National Gastroenterology Prize 2005, and the Pfizer Clinical Research Prize 2018. JCM was also the head of the molecular diagnostics laboratory of IPATIMUP. As of May 2024, JCM is a co-author of 200 scientific publications, with a total number of citations over 15000 and an h-index of 50 (Scopus Author ID: 7102792651).
