Mariana Resende (MR) is a researcher at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), University of Porto. She holds a BSc and MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Porto and a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Minho (2019), where she studied granuloma assembly during mycobacterial infections under the supervision of Rui Appelberg and Gil Castro. Her doctoral research was conducted both in Portugal (i3s) and USA, under supervision of Andrea Cooper at the Trudeau Institute.
Her research focuses on host immune responses to mycobacterial infections and translational studies in respiratory diseases. In 2025, she was awarded a contracted researcher position through the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and joined Margarida Saraiva’s lab at i3S. She is currently involved in a clinical research project in collaboration with the Pneumology Service at Hospital de São João, co-managing a cohort study on fibrotic interstitial lung diseases that integrates molecular profiling, environmental factors, and disease progression.
MR has authored 15 publications (h-index 10) and has supervised 2 BSc and 3 MSc students. She is currently supervising 1 research fellow and co-supervising 1 PhD student. She has also been a visiting scientist at institutions including the Instituto René Rachou – FIOCRUZ Minas, Hôpital Necker – CNRS, and the Centre for Genomic Regulation. From 2018 to 2021, she served as an invited assistant professor at the School of Health – Polytechnic of Porto. In parallel with her research career, she is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Political Science at ISCTE (Lisbon).
