Bruna Costa
PhD Student

Bruna Filipa Vieira Costa graduated in Biology in 2016 with a Master in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (2018).  She is Biomedical Engineering (PhD), formed at BioEngineered Surfaces Group (i3S/FEUP), with her thesis submitted and waiting for public defense.
Her research interests are the development and assessment of infection-prevention biomaterials/compounds with focus on natural-based materials.
Her Ph.D. work was focused on exploring antimicrobial peptides-based hydrogels to fight orthopedic infections, providing new insights for the development of alternative therapeutics to fight resistant bacteria. During her time abroad, Bruna worked at the University of Navarra, Spain, mainly studying the synergism between antimicrobial peptides and antibiotics to treat bacteria/biofilms.
She has experience with natural polymers (chitosan, cyanobacterial polymers), and antimicrobial peptides to prevent and treat infections, and is very proficient in antimicrobial activity and biofilm assays. B. Costa has 4 papers published in Q1 international journals (mean IF: 5.17, with a total of 62 citations) and 1 book chapter (Springer). She has been actively engaged in different national and international R&D projects and several technology transfer programs. She has participated in science outreach activities and has participated in several national and international conferences as a participant (total of 15 oral presentations - 7 of them international and 12 poster presentations- 4 of them international) and as a volunteer in the conference's organization. Has received 5 awards and/or honors. She was member of the I3S GreenLab Initiative steering group during (2022) and volunteer from 2020-2023.
