Catarina Leite Pereira
Research Scientist
Catarina is a Biology graduate from Faculdade de Ciências of Universidade do Porto. During her studies, she has developed a special interest for biomedical engineering and regeneration, which led her to the Biomedical Engineering Master program at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. During her Master she has joined the team of Professor Mário Barbosa, and participated in the European Research Project DISC Regeneration; her work was focused on the production of polymeric nanoparticles for anti-inflammatory drug delivery in the intervertebral disc. In 2013, Catarina started her PhD in Biomedical Sciences at ICBAS, Universidade do Porto, and joined an AO Spine Research Project in collaboration with the Musculoskeletal Regeneration Program at the AO Research Institute Davos in Switzerland. During her PhD, she developed a chemoattractant delivery system for Mesenchymal Stem Cells recruitment towards the Intervertebral Disc and studied the role of the recruited cells in intervertebral disc regeneration, namely in the ECM production. Currently she collaborates in the European Project RESTORE.
