Inês Vilela Sousa
PhD Student

Inês Pereira Vilela de Sousa completed her Master's in Bioengineering-Molecular Bioengineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto in 2022 and her Bachelor's in Engineering Science-Bioengineering in 2020 at the same institution.  In 2021, she undertook a 6-month Erasmus+ internship at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium, focusing on mRNA vaccine development for cancer, Listeria monocytogenes, and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Her master thesis, "A bioengineered, photocrosslinkable chitosan-based patch for gastric ulcer healing", completed in i3S on the Biofabrication group, explored chemical modifications of chitosan, crosslinking strategies, and their impact on patch properties. In November 2022, Inês secured an 8-month Research Fellowship grant for the "Agência Nacional de Inovação SA" project BIOsseoSpine, focusing on developing a bioactive membrane for posterolateral lumbar fusion. Her work involves evaluating cellular interactions with the membranes and mechanical characterization of materials. In 2023, Inês was awarded a PhD grant by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) to develop a tissue engineering strategy combining 3D cell culture with the application of magnetic fields under the supervision of Cristina Barrias, Isabel Calejo (FMUP) and Riccardo Levato (UMC Utrecht).
