Teresa Summavielle
Group leader
Teresa Summavielle (IBMC) has a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in development of the nervous system under exposure to psychostimulant drugs. She is the Head of the Addiction Biology Group at i3S.This research group explores the mechanisms of neurotoxicity induced by exposure to different drugs of abuse. Her major publications focused the effects of ecstasy in the adolescent brain, more recently she become interested in the effects of psychostimulants at the level of neuronal morphology and also in neuroinflammation. Neuroprotection was always a major goal of her research. She coordinates courses in Neurobiology of Addiction in two doctoral programs (University of Porto) and she is an invited Professor at the Allied Scholl of Health in Porto (ESS-PP). She has also a particular interest in Science Communication as a tool to prevent drug abuse in the adolescent.
