Where Ideas Grow
Reto Gassmann
Scientific Coordinator
Reto Gassmann studied biochemistry and molecular biology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. After completing his MSc degree in 2001, he joined the group of Bill Earnshaw at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology in Edinburgh for PhD research on chromosome segregation during cell division. In 2005, he moved to California to become a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Arshad Desai at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in La Jolla, where he continued to work on the molecular mechanisms of cell division. In 2012, he joined IBMC as a principal investigator. His group is interested in the mechanisms that regulate cytoplasmic dynein, a microtubule-based motor with multiple essential functions in dividing and non-dividing cells.
