Rute Nunes is currently an Associate Researcher at Nanomedicines & Translational Drug Delivery Group at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), University of Porto, Portugal and an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde (IUCS), Gandra, Portugal. She graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2013 and holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2018) from Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto, Portugal in collaboration with Instituto de Investigação do Medicamento (iMEd.ULisboa), Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa. Her research is focused on the development of nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for mucosal drug delivery. In the last two years, she also conducted research in the cell replacement therapy field, focusing in the combination of stem cell-based therapies and smart nanomedicines for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus treatment. Her broad research interests include nanomedicine, nanotechnology-based systems for drug delivery, biomaterials and cell-based therapies. She has a broad experience in the development and characterization of polymeric nanosystems, cell-based assays and in vivo experiments using healthy and diseased animal models. She published 23 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals and four book chapters with a h-index of 16 and a total of 574 citations. She interacted with 78 collaborators co-authorship of scientific work. As a researcher, she describes herself as a passionate and versatile researcher, capable of integrating different projects, being highly adaptable to different situations and challenges. Besides being a dedicated worker, she is always enthusiastic to learn and develop new skills.
