José das Neves
Associate Researcher

José das Neves is Assistant Researcher at i3S/INEB since 2019. He graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2003) and holds a MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology (2007) and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013) from the University of Porto, Portugal. Prior to engaging in a full-time research career, he worked as clinical pharmacist at the Hospital Geral de Sto. António, Portugal (2004-2009). José was a visiting researcher at Northeastern University (USA) in 2009-2010 and at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Belgium) in 2010. After completing his PhD, he moved to INEB as a Postdoc/Junior Researcher (2014-2019). His broad research interest includes nanomedicine, drug delivery, and women's health. José's current research focuses specifically on the development of drug delivery strategies for the prevention or treatment of sexually transmitted infections and lower female genital tract diseases, and on new approaches for tackling mucosal barriers to the transport of nanocarriers. As of January 2024, he is the author of 82 peer-reviewed articles, 14 book chapters, and 87 presentations at scientific meetings. He is the co-Editor of 5 scientific books, Associate Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology (Frontiers Media), and Editorial Board member of Biomedical Technology (KeAi/Elsevier), PLOS ONE (Public Library of Science), Pharmaceutics (MDPI), Nanomaterials (MDPI), 4Open (EDP Sciences) and Scientific Letters (CESPU). José is a member of the Board of the CRS Spanish-Portuguese Local Chapter. He is also an active collaborator of the Global Burden of Disease Study, contributing to 38 peer-reviewed articles from this international consortium.
