TL Duarte graduated in Biology by the University of Lisbon in 2000. In 2007, TL Duarte obtained his PhD from the University of Leicester (UK), for investigating the so-called ?non-antioxidant? roles of vitamin C. Since becoming an independently funded researcher at IBMC in 2009, his research interests focused on the search for modifiers of iron overload-related liver disease. TL Duarte demonstrated the crucial hepatoprotectant role of transcription factor NRF2 against iron toxicity in mice, and more recently the ability of NRF2 to sense toxic iron and regulate BMP6/hepcidin signalling.
