I was born in Lisbon in 1964. Graduated in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 1987 and moved at the end of the year to Porto, where in January 1991 I concluded an M.Sc. in Immunology at the Abel Salazar Institute of the University of Porto, under the supervision of Maria de Sousa. In 1991 I went to the laboratory of Alan Williams at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford, having obtained my D.Phil. in Immunology from Wolfson College in 1995. In the beginning of 1997 I returned to Porto to work at the IBMC-Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology as a post-doc in the lab of Maria de Sousa, and in 2002 started the group of Cell Activation and Gene Expression. My research has focused on the study of T cell activation and signal transduction mechanisms, and their impact in inflammation and in the development of autoimmunity.
