I am physician-scientist and leader of the Hematopoiesis and Microenvironments group. My teams’ goals are to study the cell extrinsic regulation of leukemia and hematopoiesis at the local and systemic levels and to unravel new biological mechanisms in leukemia through in vivo studies. I am also a clinician at the Dept of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation in IPO-Porto and an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP).
I previously performed research in the fields of angiogenesis and inflammation (FMUP). In my PhD studies (Lo Celso's lab, Imperial College London), I reported that T-ALL is niche-agnostic and extremely motile (Hawkins* and Duarte* et al. Nature 2016), investigated acute leukemia cell in vivo migration (Immunology and Cell Biology, 2019) and studied how HSC-supporting niches are disrupted in AML (Duarte et al. Cell Stem Cell. 2018). In 2017, I was part of the EHA-ASH Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) program. More recently, in collaboration with Graça Porto, we showed how iron is redistributed in AML and what are the clinical implications of this redistribution (Lopes M et al. Blood Advances. 2021) and demonstrated that Nrf2-mediated anti-oxidant cellular defense is crucial to prevent the emergence of myelodysplasia and innefective hematopoiesis (Duarte TL et al. Leukemia 2023)
